Pleased to be included as one of the think tank, trustee and incorporator of the newly registered preschool, senior high and TESDA school - the Archangel Saint Michael Academy.

Despite the pandemic and a shaky economy in 2019, we are able to put up this school for the benefit of the youth and less fortunate childrens in Bula.  Be part of us now in helping cultivate strong positive values with ASMA - Archangel Saint Michael Academy .. education with flying colors!

bienvenido santos @ roco library

the Naga Library is named Raul Roco in honor of the late senator and legislator. 

the Roco Lib as many call it.. did  not house the memorabilia of Sen. Roco only. for it also housed the materials and manuscripts of writer Bienvenido N. Santos.

Bievenido Nuque Santos, known as a prolific writer in english, has contributed a lot in Bicol... in Naga in particular. He taugth and became the Executive Vice President of the University of Nueva CAceres.

Santos married a Bicolana from Daraga and have children, one of which is Lourdes Santos Anonas  who worked also in the University of Nueva CAceres as teacher, Dean and later, as Executive Vice President. . 

for sometime we also encountered the word " the heart of Bicol".. it is  a phrase describe for Naga and originally a poem written by Santos.

4 years ago, to enliven the works of BN Santos, Naga sponsored the Bienvenido N. Santos Short Story Writing Contest for English and Bicol.

villa magdalena, scents of apple etc..  are among his works...... we encountered and read those writings in college.. ..... if you miss the chance of meeting Santos,,, come and visit the Naga Library because in the future we will be organizing more activities for him.

Bienvenido N. Santos Short Story Writing Contest is extended!

ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to all residents of the six Bicol provinces-Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Masbate and Sorsogon-who have attained the age of 16 and above. High school seniors, college students, and Bicol residents interested in writing are encouraged to participate. IMPORTANT: Since the goal of this contest is to encourage more literary writing by beginning writers, professional writers who are at least 3-time awardees in other literary contests are not eligible to participate. There is a limit of ONE ENTRY PER PERSON.

DEADLINE: November 30, 2020.

    HOW TO ENTER: The author’s name, address, telephone/cell phone number, email address and a 25-50 word biographical sketch must be included with his/her entry on a separate sheet of paper. The name of the author should not appear on the story itself. There is no entry fee. Entrants will be contracted by email to acknowledge receipt of their stories.

    CONTENTS: Entries written in English or Bicol must be unpublished original stories. Stories set in Bicol with themes related to life in Bicol will be preferred and given extra points.

    JUDGING: A Committee of Readers will complete the first round of judging and select at least 12-15 best stories in English out of the entries submitted. These selected stories will then be sent to a panel of judges who will select the First, Second, and Third prize winners. For the Bicol Short Story Division, a separate panel of judges will choose the best story and two honorable mentions.

    All entries become the property of the Raul S. Roco  – Naga City Public Library and will not be returned.

    Each entry must be submitted by the contest deadline in its own envelope. Stories submitted by fax machine and E-Mail will not be accepted. Illegible entries will be disqualified.

    Stories must be written in English, or Bicol, and should be original and unpublished up to the time the winners are declared in December 2020.

    Stories must be written on a computer or a typewriter, on letter size (8 ½ x 11) paper, be double-spaced and no longer than 1,500-2,500 words.

    Total word count must be printed on the front page of the story.

    No changes to a story are allowed once it is received.

    Inquiries to follow up on entries will not be allowed.

    Pseudonyms or pen names are not permitted.

    By entering the Contest, entrants agree to allow Raul S. Roco Library to publish their stories, names, photos, and biographical information without compensation. Winners also consent to authorize the Contest Sponsor to publish the winning entries into a book.

Leonor Dy-Liacco at Naga Library

"Her first love: Bicol culture" is an article wrote by Teresa Aureus'  in the book entitled "Interesting Bicolana". Aureus narrates the life of Leonor Dy-Liacco who was an active advocate of Bicol culture.

Last September, the City Government of Naga led by Mayor John Bongat inaugurated a special corner dedicated to Mrs. Leonor Dy-Liacco. Attended by her children Becky and Gil,  and the Kabikolan society whom she organized in 1970s.

Also, librarians, historians and relatives also present  to paid tribute to Mrs Dy-Liacco.

Naga Library as a reading center also served as a repository of local histories... and its fitting that the Dy-liacco family placed the mementos of her mother to the public library in the hope of inspiring the young to be lovers of arts the bicol literature.

raul roco's special library

NAGA LIBRARY IS NAMED RAUL ROCO LIBRARY, but in the Senator's house in La Vista, thousands of books are shelved and it is also named Raul Roco Library.

it was an privilige to encounter the books read by the late senator in his house. the books that made him the favorite son of Bicol. the collection of books covered all the subjects,,, generally it is a library for all type of readers........  interestingly,,, the books were organized according to his favorite topic.

Indeed, if you want to become intelligent and genius, you have to read book a day or read book a week. like Senator Roco, his confidence and knowledge is over flowing... very inspiring.

 
 

Library: a place for every Bicol piece

NAGA LIBRARY CANNOT COMPETE WITH ACADEMIC LIBRARIES...  BUT WITH BICOL MATERIALS, WE ARE AT PAR WITH THEM.

The theme of this year gatherings of Bicol librarians is timely. it also an oppportune time to collaborate in coming up with the standards in local cataloging. The RSR Library Lecture is an annual gathering aimed at promoting the use, introducing innovative services and presenting local authors. all aimed at improving our local collections - the BIKOLIANA. The seminar aimed also to make the Bicol collection as one of the priorities in setting up a Filipiniana sections in the Bicol libraries... 

 

AGAIN, AGAIN, THANKS TO THE LIBRARIANS WHO ATTENDED. There are 48 librarians, 13 students in library science together with the Director of National Library Antonio Santos and speaker historian - Dr. Danny Gerona and the group of writers who have were kind to accomodate my invitation to launched their books - Prof Marvin Sambajon's  In light of reason, Lou Nierva's  Osipon, Zaldy Manrique's  The young Bienvenido Santos  and Randy Bacares'  Dr. Jaime Hernandez, a biographical sketch.  AGAIN, see you in the 4th Raul Roco Lecture!
